It’s your wedding! It’s a big deal! The question is this: Should I hire a bagpiper for this event? The other question is: If I hire one, what does a bagpiper do at a wedding?
Those are all great questions. Let me explain what I do at weddings. My job initially is to greet your guests as they arrive for the Ceremony. I have played hundreds of weddings over the last 15 years. If your ceremony is at 2pm, you average guest will start arriving about 1:35. I usually play until the bride gets out of the Limo and goes into the church. At this time, the organist will take over playing a prelude. When the ceremony is finished I play again as the guests come out for the receiving line. I play a wide variety of tunes including marches and dancing tunes to keep the music upbeat. This is the standard M.O. at most weddings. The majority of weddings that I play are in the Catholic Church. Most Priests still believe that the Scottish Bagpipe is the “Instrument of War”. That being the case, it is not allowed in the church.
On the rare occasion where it is ok to play inside the church, I can play the bride down the aisle, and then play the bride and groom out of the church at the end of service. These are called the “bagpipe processional” and the “bagpipe recessional”. Because the Scottish Bagpipe is portable, there are also times when the wedding takes place in a park, or by a river or at a home. In these situations, I usually do all of the ceremony music. In this situation, I usually play as the guests arrive, I then transition to the ceremony where I will play in the Moms, play in the Bridle Party and then play the Bride and her Father down the aisle. When the ceremony ends, I play the recessional and lead the Bride and Groom back up the aisle and continue playing during their receiving line.
