I definitely have an opinion about being a “Party Bagpiper”. Bagpipes are not background music. People want to be able to talk to each other at a party. I also feel the same way about Cocktail Hours so I developed what I call “The Bagpipergram”.
The “Bagpipergram”
As bagpipes are a “center of attention” type of instrument, I created a 30 minute program that I do for parties. I play a lot of parties. When I do a “Bagpipergram”, the goal is to surprise the audience and get their attention. I usually march in playing a tune of “attack”. I have developed a monologue to go along with the music so that my audience gets some background about the pipes, music, the kilt etc. I have found that over a period of time I have booked other performances from these “Bagpipergrams”. For 30 minutes I play and entertain the audience, they get an education and I get some publicity. It’s a win-win every time.
