I think that one of the greatest things about our instrument is the amount of music that is written for it.  It was always the tunes that kept me motivated to play this instrument.  There were so many tunes of all different types.

The first book listed here is called "A Piper's Christmas".  I have arranged 42 carols, hymns and Christmas Songs for your enjoyment.  This project started out when a student asked for a Christmas song that wasn't available in print.  I started with that one and created this book.  I found that when we started working in this book in the beginning of November that by January my student's ability to sight read the music had greatly improved because they were working with music that they were familiar with.  When we went to the regular music the amount of sight reading progress was incredible!  This book sells for $36.00 with an accompanying CD.

The next few books are a series of books arranged by World Famous Bagpiper Burt Mitchell.  In Book 1, Burt took 62 of the most popular bagpipe tunes and arranged them very well.  I love this series and like his arrangements.  He also recorded an accompanying CD for each book so that you can hear how the tunes are supposed to sound making them easier to learn.

He took the most popular 6/8 Marches and created Book 2Book 3 are the most popular 2/4 Competition Marches again with a CD and finally he compiled all of the most popular Irish Tunes for Book 4.  This is a great set to own.  The books are not written on parchment and are relatively inexpensive so you can write your notes into them without feeling guilty.  All of these books along with the Cd's sell for $36.00  each.  These are a great value!

"Rhythmic Fingering" by James McGillivray is an incredible book about developing good bagpipe technique.  This book is full of exercises designed to improve your playing, it is not a beginners book.     Every instrument has one if not many of these types of books written for it.  I believe that this is the first if not the only great technique book for the Great Highland Bagpipe of Scotland.  This book sells for $40.00.

Every Bagpiper at some point in the bagpipe life should own the Scots Guards Books.  These are collections of all types of music written for this instrument.  Marches, Strathspeys, Reels, Hornpipes, Jigs, Slow Aires and even a Piobareachd or two are in these collections.  These are definite books that you don't write in.  They will keep you busy for a long, long time.  The sell for $63.00 each

There are basically 3 types of bagpipe music:  The Marches, The Dancing Tunes and the Classical Music or "Old Music"  called the Piobaireachd.  The Killberry Book is a repertoire book consisting of 120 tunes.  This is a great book to have in your collection.  When I bought mine in the 70's I paid $16.50 for it.  Today it sells for $62.95.  Hey if you buy one and don't play the tunes, it will be a bagpipe asset that will increase in value over a period of time!
